BASC is a charitable organization dedicated to the nurture and promotion of Bengali and Indian culture, language, and religion for the Southern California community through educational, religious, and charitable activities.
August 27th BASC presented an evening showcasing a leading artist, Mr. Hiran Mitra from Kolkata. The venue was Ektaa Centre and the theme of Mr. Mitra’s show was
“ Absence is a greater presence …..the actor has left “…..
Mr. Mitra’s association with the world of theatre spans over two decades and hence the installation that he displayed ….was a tribute to that. The display, with an assortment of humble home depot boxes, garden sticks and paper made masks displayed in apparent random order was to create the illusion that the presence of the actor lingers on…..much after the actor has left the stage……illustrating how performing art transforms into visual art and vice-versa.
A short docu-feature made by the film maker Ladli Mukhophayay, led the audience to the wonderful world of Hiran Mitra’s art….the world where forms, shapes, etchings, collaging take a life of its own. His association with the Chou dancers ,Goti poua sect and his sketches on them was a truly informative journey for the audience.
This led to the Q and A section of the program where Mr Mitra adressed questions in his trademark humorous style giving more insight on the workings of his art …..his contribution to the world of nonfigurative abstract art …..
The evening closed on yet another feature presentation between the artist and some of the most recognized poets of the time like Sonkho Ghosh, Sunil Gangopadhyay and many more…..His work in paper and their poetry formed a great visual and audio visual journey for the audience …..who wished this evening would never end…..
Mr Hiran Mitra commended BASC and their volunteers for providing help and support during and after the installation & serving light refreshments to the attendees.
